HDFC Bank and Kinnect turn comedy into digital fraud awareness

HDFC Bank and Kinnect have expanded the bank’s Vigil Aunty fraud-awareness platform with a seven-episode stand-up comedy special, ‘Vigil Aunty Says – Laziness Saves’, streaming on JioHotstar.

The campaign addresses the role of urgency in digital fraud, highlighting how scammers pressure people into making quick decisions, clicking suspicious links, sharing OTPs or responding to threats such as digital arrest scams.

The comedy special features Aakash Gupta, Gaurav Kapoor, Ramkumar, Harsh Gujral, Sonu Venugopal, Munawar Faruqui and Kenny Sebastian, with each comedian presenting a different take on everyday laziness. The campaign uses the idea of pausing before taking action as a simple behavioural approach to preventing fraud.

The initiative also includes an outdoor advertising execution featuring a deliberately unfinished billboard, with workers seemingly leaving the installation incomplete alongside the message, ‘Laziness Has Spread Everywhere’.

Ravi Santhanam, Chief Marketing Officer & Group Head, HDFC Bank, said fraudsters use panic and urgency to manipulate people into making quick mistakes. He highlighted the campaign’s use of comedy and stand-up performers to communicate fraud awareness and encourage greater caution while transacting digitally.

Jahid Ahmed, Senior Vice President – Head of Growth and Digital Marketing, HDFC Bank, said the campaign was designed to engage audiences through a format that resonates across generations. He noted that the campaign flips the narrative around fake urgency by positioning the simple act of pausing and being ‘lazy’ as a way to stay safer from fraud.

Chandni Shah, CEO, Kinnect, highlighted the evolution of Vigil Aunty as a sustained and culturally relevant public-interest platform. She said the latest campaign combines entertainment, education and popular culture to make fraud awareness more accessible and engaging.

Yogesh Mani Pradhan, Group ECD, Kinnect, added that humour can encourage audiences to engage with serious subjects that they might otherwise avoid, allowing the seven-comedian format to turn a public-safety message into content people actively choose to watch.

The seven-episode special premiered exclusively on JioHotstar and is now available to stream. Through the campaign, HDFC Bank and Kinnect aim to reinforce a simple digital-safety message: when something creates panic or urgency, pausing before acting can help prevent fraud.
