Training was always the easy half of the equation. Performance was half worth chasing and for twenty years, we measured the wrong one.
Herman Ebbinghaus proved over a century ago that recall tapers within days of learning something new. We have known this since long before e-learning existed. What has changed now is the fix: for the first time, we have technology built for the actual shape of the problem. Training happens on a calendar. Work happens in real time. AI knowledge assistants are the first tool designed to meet people exactly where the second one lives.
India’s readiness story is accelerating
National employability hit 56.35% in 2026, per the India Skills Report (ETS, with CII, AICTE, and AIU) up from 54.81% the year before, and climbing fast. Over 90% of Indian employees are already using generative AI at work.
Globally, the pattern behind that adoption is clear: Microsoft’s Work Trend Index found that 62% of employees spend too much time searching for information, communicating and coordinating during their workday. That is not a training gap, it is a retrieval gap. People generally know where the answer lives; they just cannot get to it fast enough to use it in the moment. Closing that gap is where the next wave of productivity is hiding.
Government programs ITI expansion, PMKVY 4.0 are driving real momentum on the policy side. AI knowledge assistants add the missing piece at the individual, moment-of-work level: the layer that makes every rupee of that investment show up on the job, not just in a training record. In a manufacturing environment, for example, the difference can be very practical. Instead of searching through an SOP or waiting for a supervisor, an employee can ask a question at the point of work and receive an answer grounded in the organisation’s approved knowledge.
Meeting people where the work happens
The old model asked employees to come back to learning a refresher module, a recertification email on a fixed schedule. The new model shows up on theirs. Picture a relationship manager mid-conversation with a customer, or an engineer debugging a production issue at midnight. An AI assistant embedded in the CRM or chat tool they are already using answers in that instant like a sharp, well-read colleague, not a search engine handing over forty documents.
At India’s scale cohorts spanning six languages and four time zones that is where the magnitude shows up. One assistant, consistently excellent, available to everyone at once.
One discipline matters here: keep the knowledge base as sharp as the assistant answering from it. The real differentiator will not simply be the intelligence of the model, but the quality, currency and governance of the enterprise knowledge it is allowed to use.
Foundation, then bridge
Formal training is not going anywhere, and it should not. It is still how people get their first grounding in a role, a product, a process, the foundation everything else is built on. What AI knowledge assistants add is the bridge: the layer that carries that foundation into the daily reality of the job, long after the session has ended and the calendar has moved on.
Measuring what actually matters
The real shift is not AI replacing training. It is AI finally giving organizations a way to measure what training was always meant to produce performance, not just what was easiest to measure, which was attendance. That means measuring outcomes closer to the work itself: whether employees resolve issues faster, make fewer errors, follow processes more consistently and need fewer escalations. These are far more meaningful measures of learning effectiveness than course completion.
For a country converting its demographic dividend into an economic one, that is the multiplier that matters. Knowledge assistants close the distance between what people learn and what they do in real time, at scale, continuously.
The Forgetting Curve is not a problem to solve once. It is a constant we now have the tools to stay ahead of, every single day.
