OpenAI introduces teen-focused ChatGPT experience with Tisca Chopra

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience aimed at helping young users learn, explore ideas and develop critical thinking skills while using artificial intelligence within stronger safety frameworks.

The teen-focused experience brings together a range of educational features, including Study Mode, Responsible Homework Reminders, Quizzes and Learning Visualizations. These tools are designed to make AI-supported learning more interactive and encourage teenagers to engage with subjects more thoughtfully.

A new Study Hours feature also gives teens and parents the option to set specific periods when Study Mode is automatically activated. Users identified as under 18, as well as those who state that they are between 13 and 17, will automatically access the ChatGPT for Teens experience.

The platform introduces additional protections across sensitive areas, including self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and sexually explicit or graphic content. Parents with linked teen accounts can use Parental Controls to manage selected settings, establish Quiet Hours and receive safety notifications in limited high-risk situations.

Teen users will also receive more frequent reminders to take breaks during extended usage, supporting healthier and more balanced engagement with AI.

As part of the initiative, OpenAI hosted ‘Open Dialogues on Youth Safety and AI’ in Mumbai, featuring Tisca Chopra and Soha Ali Khan. The discussion focused on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in young people’s lives and the importance of parental awareness and involvement.

OpenAI also introduced the ‘Parents’ Guide to Learning with ChatGPT’, a resource intended to help families better understand ChatGPT for Teens, configure parental controls and encourage responsible and healthy AI habits at home.

Pragya Misra, Head of Strategy & Global Affairs, India, OpenAI, said that parents and educators play a crucial role in guiding how young people learn, create and engage with AI. She emphasised that meaningful adult involvement can help young users benefit from the opportunities offered by AI while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Soha Ali Khan highlighted the importance of encouraging children to question information, think independently and maintain their judgement while using emerging technologies.

Tisca Chopra said that understanding tools such as Study Mode and Parental Controls can help parents engage in more meaningful conversations with their children about technology and set thoughtful boundaries around AI use.

Through ChatGPT for Teens and the Parents’ Guide, OpenAI aims to create a more supportive ecosystem for young users, enabling them to learn, create and explore responsibly while giving families and educators greater tools to guide their AI journey.
