Maharashtra is set to establish India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) university, an initiative aimed at positioning the state as a hub for AI-driven innovation. Announcing the development, State IT Minister Ashish Shelar highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing AI research, specialised education and industry-academia collaboration.
A government-appointed task force has been formed to oversee the university’s creation. The panel includes representatives from premier institutions such as IIT Mumbai and IIM Mumbai, along with officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Google India, Mahindra Group, L&T, the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission and the Data Security Council of India. This expert group is working on a comprehensive roadmap to guide the university’s development.
The proposed AI university will offer cutting-edge academic programmes, skill development initiatives and research opportunities, while also playing a key role in shaping AI policy and emerging technology frameworks. Chaired by the principal secretary of the IT department, the task force has already conducted two meetings to finalise the institution’s framework.
While specifics regarding the university’s location, funding model and timeline remain undisclosed, this initiative underscores Maharashtra’s strategic vision to cement its leadership in AI. The move aligns with India’s broader push for AI integration across industries, backed by both government and private sector investments.
