In a new initiative, Uber has rolled out the ability for drivers to record audio during trips if they feel uncomfortable or concerned about safety. The audio recordings will be encrypted and inaccessible to both the driver and the rider, ensuring privacy. Uber will only access the recordings if the driver submits them as part of a safety report.

In a press release shared by the company, it stated, “This feature, compliant with India’s one-party consent law, is available nationwide. It offers peace of mind in situations where drivers may feel vulnerable during a trip.”

Further, to enhance safety and flexibility for female drivers, the company has introduced an optional feature allowing them to accept rides only from female passengers. This feature has already facilitated over 21,000 trips and aims to help female earners prioritise their safety, especially during late hours, while increasing their working hours and earnings.

It has also introduced a tipping option for riders facing delays in securing a trip. By adding a tip before the trip begins, riders can incentivize drivers to accept their request promptly. This benefits both riders, by increasing the likelihood of securing a ride and drivers, by boosting their earnings.

Another enhancement allows drivers to access payments instantly through the app, providing greater financial flexibility and convenience.

These initiatives come as Uber faces stiff competition from rivals like InDrive and Rapido, which charge lower commissions, making driver-centric measures critical to retaining its workforce.
