SSI hits new milestone with completion of transcontinental robotic surgeries

SS Innovations International has announced that they have completed transcontinental robotic surgeries using its indigenously developed SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System.

The landmark procedures were conducted live during the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) Conference in Strasbourg, France, and connected surgical teams 10,000 kilometres apart, from IRCAD Headquarters in Strasbourg to Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) and the IRCAD National Centre in Indore, India.

The surgical milestone comprised two advanced telesurgeries: a gastric bypass performed by Dr. Mohit Bhandari, President of IRCAD India, and a robotic atrial septal defect (ASD) closure executed by Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of SS Innovations.

Both operations were completed with flawless precision, zero complications, and imperceptible latency, firmly establishing the reliability and sophistication of the SSI Mantra system on a global stage.

Dr. Bhandari’s gastric bypass, completed in just over 44 minutes, illustrated not only the efficiency of the system but also its potential to transform bariatric surgery accessibility. Meanwhile, Dr. Srivastava’s robotic cardiac intervention was moderated by Dr. Husam H. Balkhy, a world-renowned robotic cardiac surgeon and President of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS), further underscoring the international significance of the event.

Seamless support on the ground in Indore was provided by Dr. Lalit Malik, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Manipal Hospital Jaipur, alongside Dr. Ram Krishna Shukla and Dr. Bipin Arya from SAIMS. The operations ran without a hitch, a testament to the SSI Mantra 3’s surgical precision and robust telesurgery framework.

Dr. Srivastava lauded the achievement, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this medical breakthrough.

“This historic achievement not only demonstrates the advanced capabilities of our SSI Mantra system but also further paves the way for redefining and democratising global delivery of complex cardiac care,” he stated.

Dr. Bhandari added, “The success of the SSI Mantra system proves that the future of safe, precise, and inclusive surgery is here, and it’s being shaped in India.”

Developed with the goal of making robotic surgery more accessible and affordable, the SSI Mantra is India’s first surgical robotic system approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for both telesurgery and tele-proctoring. It features a modular, multi-arm setup, ergonomic surgeon command centre, and advanced visual capabilities, including a 32-inch 3D 4K monitor and over 40 types of endo-surgical instruments adaptable across specialties.

To date, more than 5,000 multi-specialty surgeries have been successfully performed using the SSI Mantra system, including 35 telesurgeries and over 250 cardiac procedures, all without any device-related complications. This record cements SS Innovations’ position as a global leader in robotic surgery, with India at the forefront of innovation.

As SS Innovations continues to scale its technology across borders, the future of complex, real-time remote surgeries look increasingly viable, ushering in a new era of global healthcare connectivity.
